Digital Story Telling and Rubric

Digital storytelling can be used in all grade levels and in all subject areas. Through digital storytelling students can demonstrate their creativity and present a story using characters, situations, events, rules, and many other ideas. Students would benefit from digital storytelling because it allows for students to creatively express themselves utilizing technology.

The ISTE NETS and performance standards (2008) that digital story telling best connects to is Standard 3: "Model Digital-Age Work and Learning" sustandard: 3c: "communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and peers using a variety of digital-age media and formats" (International Society for Technology in Education, 2008, www.iste.org). When creating a digital story students are recording their ideas and presenting them to their peers. Teachers can assess what a child has learned by listening to their digital recording.

Using garage band I created a story for children in the primary grades.

My story presented school bus safety rules.

The text was:
  • “There are many ways to get to school. How do you get to school?"
  • “There is my ride to school” -- “The big yellow school bus”
  • “I love riding the bus, but I have to remember that there are rules that need followed to ride the bus”
  • “Rules are designed to keep me and my friends safe while we are on the bus”
  • “The bus driver is in charge and has the right to make any rules, some rules on the school bus are.”
  • "Students may enter or leave the bus only when the bus driver signals”
  • “Remain seated at all times!”
  • “ Do not Stick anything out the window”
  • “ Do not throw any objects while riding the bus!”
  • “ Keep the aisle clear of feet, legs, and other school equipment!”
  • “ No yelling, it will distract the driver!”
  • “Do not move until the bus it totally stopped!”
  • “ Never crawl under the school bus!”
  • “ If you drop something while getting on or off the school bus, do not pick it up, tell the bus driver first or they will not be able to see you”
  • "Oh LOOK we are already to school.”
  • “Bye bus driver Jane!”

I also created a rubric on how I would grade my students in the classroom after creating a digital story. A great way to easily create rubrics for any assignment is the website: RubiStar (http://rubistar.4teachers.org
